Shopify now lets you add descriptions under each shipping rate at checkout. This small feature can make a big difference in helping customers understand their options and complete their purchase confidently.

A lot of Shopify stores only use the basic shipping rate title and price. That works, but it leaves little room to explain what customers were actually paying for.

Instead, you can add a short description under each rate name. It’s a small improvement, but it can make checkout clearer, reduce uncertainty, and even improve conversion rates.

Let’s take a closer look at why this matters and how to make the most of it.

What this feature actually does

When you create flat shipping rates in Settings → Shipping and delivery, you’ll see an extra field to add a description. This text shows up under the rate name at checkout, in a smaller font style.

Before this feature was introduced, you had a 128-character limit in the rate name itself. That forced merchants to cram too much information into one line, often making it hard to read.

With the description field, you can add as much context as you need. The character limit is in the thousands, though you probably won’t need that much space.

You can use this to include:

  • Estimated delivery time (for example, “Delivered in 2–4 business days”)

  • Shipping carrier for custom rates (“Shipped via UPS Ground”)

  • Tracking details (“Includes full tracking and delivery updates”)

  • Special instructions (“Signature required upon delivery”)

This small area of text helps the buyer understand what they’re selecting. The more confident they feel about their choice, the less likely they’ll abandon checkout.

Why it matters for conversion rate optimization

At checkout, customers are making their final decision. Any doubt can stop them from completing the purchase.

Clarity builds trust, and trust converts.

Shipping uncertainty is one of the biggest reasons for cart abandonment. If a buyer sees “Standard Shipping – $8” with no other details, they might think it’s slow or unreliable. But if they see “Standard Shipping – $8 / Delivered in 3–5 business days with tracking,” that’s enough reassurance to move forward.

Here’s how adding clear descriptions helps:

  1. Reduces confusion - Customers know what they’re paying for.

  2. Manages expectations - Delivery times are clear, which prevents frustration later.

  3. Supports premium options - When you explain faster or insured shipping options, customers are more likely to upgrade.

Even if the feature feels small, it directly supports one of the biggest CRO principles: eliminate friction and uncertainty.

How to use it effectively

The goal isn’t to write paragraphs of text. It’s to provide just enough information to make the customer comfortable.

A few practical tips:

  • Keep it short and scannable. One or two lines is usually enough.

  • Lead with the benefit. Start with what matters most (“Delivered in 2–3 days”).

  • Avoid internal language. Don’t include shipping method codes or warehouse terms.

  • Match tone with brand. If your brand voice is friendly, keep it conversational but clear.

Here are a few examples you could use:

  • “Delivered in 2–4 business days. Fully trackable.”

  • “Free standard delivery on orders over $50.”

  • “Next-day delivery via FedEx Priority. Order before 2 p.m.”

Special use cases

Adding rate descriptions is especially useful in certain scenarios:

  • Multiple carriers. If you offer FedEx, USPS, and UPS options without their automatic rates, customers can compare easily.

  • International shipping. You can mention customs handling, tracking limits, or delivery timeframes.

  • Preorder or backorder items. You can set expectations for shipping delays right in checkout.

  • High-ticket items. Clear delivery info can reduce hesitation before paying higher prices.

Bonus:

You can create multiple rates for the same price / weight. And use a delivery method customization app, to show / hide one or the other based on rules.

Example: IF at least one product has tag "preorder" THEN show the rate with a description about delays.

FAQ

Can I format the text or add links? No, the description is plain text only. But Shopify gives it a secondary style to make it easy to read under the rate name.

Will this affect my existing rates? No. You can edit each rate anytime to add a description. It doesn’t change pricing or structure.

Is there a character limit? Technically yes, but it’s very high (several thousand characters). In practice, aim for one or two short sentences.

Can I preview what it looks like? Yes, Shopify now includes a live preview while editing the rate, so you can see the description in context.

Wrapping up

The ability to add descriptions under shipping rate names might not sound major, but it’s a valuable quality-of-life improvement. It helps you communicate clearly and helps customers feel confident as they check out.

Good UX often comes down to small, thoughtful details like this. Clear information builds trust - and that trust translates to higher conversions.
